The past weekend was an eventful one in the RX-7 community. With MaDS/RaCE on the east coast and SevenStock III on the west, this might have been the weekend that marks the resurrection of "Rotor Fever" in America.
SevenStock was held in Frank Bonelli Park in San Dimas, [SevenStock10.jpg] Ca. There were over 75 Mazda RX-7's plus a few earlier RX's and even a Rotary powered Dautsun 510 in attendance. There was even a few RX-7 bodied RC Racers (Electric motor, not powered by the OS Engine). The 135 people came from all over the greater LA/Southern Cal Area, San Diego, Barstow, and Las Vegas. The weather was great, although a little hot. Some were treated to a water balloon fight to cool down, others grabbed some drinks and sat in the shade to chat about the 7's. The tunes were pumping thanks to a DJ from a local station (and Gary's Brother, James, aka J-Solo from 92.3FM, the Beat), and the food was overflowing and delicious.
For some, this was the first time meeting people face to [SevenStock14.jpg] face after chatting and emailing online for many months. It was also the first time they had ever seen so many RX-7s in one place at once, myself included. When I showed up at 9:15am or so, there were already 15 RX-7 in the lot, by 11:00, the number was over 50. There were many many fine cars, in fact all of them were great! This meet was a real tribute to these fine cars. There were a few show stoppers, including the crazy FD's from Rotary Xecret 7 Wow. Just after lunch some of us were counting cars, but were thrown off by new cars arriving! I personally counted 71 cars, but I spotted at least 6 others arrive after the count.
During the lunch, there was a demonstration of a rotary engine, we got to see how everything works together in the engine to make the smooth power we all know and love. We were also shown the difference between 2mm and 3mm apex seals. The eccentric shaft could be moved freely, and people could turn it to see just how easy the rotary engine is able to spin.
After the majority of people ate, it was car show time. Every car that showed up was a winner, but this was to congratulate the owners who have the cream of the crop. We were all given ballots, and got to walk around and peer at all the cars. There were some spectacular mods, and some phenomenal stock examples of RX-7's. The results of the voting would be announced after the drive.
Next up was the Raffle, the raffle tickets were free for [SevenStock36.jpg] just attending, and $1 for any additional tickets. The prizes included: 12a and 13b rotor clocks, a rotarynews.com hat, some Mazdatrix t-shirts, a Socal7's SevenStock III t-shirt, some Racingbeat t-shirts and hats, a SCCA 1985 Championship and 792 4 Rotor Racecar Posters, a Mazdatrix Rotor keychain and Rotor oil caps, a Mazdaspeed window sticker/banner, RX-7 Stuffed Toy (which went to a very happy Putnam child ;), a Mazda window sticker, a pair of of 25th anniversary RX-7 window stickers, a Mazdatrix Window Sticker and the grand prize (actually a 2nd $5 raffle) a M2 Cold Air Intake that went to Becca, who don't even own a 3rd!
Later than expected, there was a road run through Glendora Canyon. The groups were broken up into beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The groups took the twisties like you'd expect the RX-7 too. There are over 130 turns in the first 9 miles, luckily the only thing that went wrong was a stuck cruse control cable that kept the RPM's of a GSL-SE at 3000, and Adolph's Radiator cracking... Hey ADee, you get a new Alum radiator now, right?!
After the run, things started to slow down. The awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gens were given out, and big thank you's were given to those from San Diego, Las Vegas, and Rotarynews.com (hey, that's me) for making the event so successful. I would personally like to thank Adolph, Andy, Frank, Jeff, John, Tony, Berny, Victor, Vince and the rest of the setup crew, and the entire Southern California RX-7 Club for being such a fabulous host, and to the vendors, M2 Performance/Mostly Mazda, Rotech Auto Service, Powerhouse Engineering, Mazdatrix and Racing Beat. My appologies to anyone I left off the list, the huge number of people that made SevenStock possible makes it almost impossible to thank everyone at once! |
